We are still a very small spec on this planet!

Published by admin under General

On of the best debunks of the man-caused global warming claims that I have yet seen is linked here.

Global warming alarmists maintain that global temperatures have increased since about A.D. 1860 to the present as the result of the so-called “Industrial Revolution,”– caused by releases of large amounts of greenhouse gases (principally carbon dioxide) from manmade sources into the atmosphere causing a runaway “Greenhouse Effect.”

Was man really responsible for pulling the Earth out of the Little Ice Age with his industrial pollution? If so, this may be one of the greatest unheralded achievements of the Industrial Age!

Unfortunately, we tend to overestimate our actual impact on the planet. In this case the magnitude of the gas emissions involved, even by the most aggressive estimates of atmospheric warming by greenhouse gases, is inadequate to account for the magnitude of temperature increases. So what causes the up and down cycles of global climate change?

Carjackers, Violence and weapons of defense; A case in favor of the Violent Mindset.

Published by admin under General

I started this letter about three weeks ago. I had hesitated about sending it in. Then, tonight (2Dec92), I heard about that unfortunate young man. He was car-jacked. The perpetrator had taken him, in his car, way from the scene of the crime. Then, instead of just dropping the victim off and leaving with the stolen car, the perpetrator shot the victim, in the chest, with a shotgun. The escalation, that I predicted three weeks ago, has begun. This will increase to the point that rape and killing will be synonymous with car-jackings. I write this with hope that it will be printed, that people will take heed, that they will take responsibility for their personal defence. < ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

We all know, or can surmise, that Capitalism and Communism can not coexist in the same frame because Communism is inherently passive. Capitalism offers many advantages to its adherents which, as a matter of survival, we would be foolish to forego. It is interesting to note that the same reasoning can be applied to the violence verses non-violence problem. Yet, there are folks out there that would have us do exactly that which we have just concluded as a foolish act. The study and understanding of violence is vital to your personal security. It is arguable that the path of non-violence may, or may not, make you a better person. But, it will certainly make you a victim, it may even kill you.

The situation is related to the classic “Prisoners Dilemma” problem, in that, I would have difficulty giving up an advantage while you still had that advantage to use against me. The only way it would work is for both of us to agree to give up that advantage simultaneously. But, if you betrayed me by not, in fact, giving up that advantage then I would be absolutely at your mercy. It becomes a bit more subtle if you had other advantages that you would retain while we both gave up the option we agreed to give up. Giving up firearms would be such a case. Where you would retain advantage over me in the way of skills, other weapons, or physique.

Carjackers, are people who understand the laws of violence. They generally try to pick a victim which has the least understanding of these laws. From a strategic view this makes sense, as such a victim will be least able to defend themselves. In our present culture this makes women have a higher target value then men. The ideal victim would be someone of a non-violent disposition and philosophy, as their sheer aversion to violence would keep them from having the knowledge that would make them capable of defending themselves. From this point, the Carjacker would simply assure themselves of a tactical advantage and procede with the crime. The victim, you, have at this point, no recourse as you don’t have training, materials, or tactical position to fend off such an assault. Even if you are skilled in the art of violence, you would be hard pressed to defend yourself.

The reality is that these criminals are practising the art of violence and intimidation for profit. Make no mistake, these guys are good at it. Their success record proves it. As more of them are successful then others will feel encouraged to try the technique, resulting in more successes. Police departments should be justifyably concerned with this trend. They can not possibly respond fast enough to combat it. Worse, the rules of the game will shortly break down as more criminals get involved.

Thus far, most of the victims haven’t been harmed (Mid NOV92). This can be expected to change. Some of them will start killing their victims, as a matter of procedure, under the mistaken motive of eliminating a witness. Or, just because they can. Others will take to performing rape on their female victims.

The only way to stop this trend is for you, the victim, to defend yourself. This does not mean grappleing with an armed opponent, or even an unarmed one. In most cases they will have better combat experience than you, be more skilled, or outnumber you. A loaded firearm, in the car, is only effective if you have the will, knowledge, and skill to use it. Without all three of the preceding elements, a handgun is nothing more than an expensive paperweight. It is effective in the hands of a car-jacker only because he has the will to use it, and he can convince you of that will. My wife carries CN (Tear Gas) because she has fewer cumpunctions about pressing a button than pulling a trigger. Also, it takes a lot of intensive training to learn how, and when, to use a firearm. One carjacking occured at knife-point. I submit, that if the victim had understood, and was familiar with, violence then they might not have remained a victim.

You must understand strategy and tactics. You must learn to understand the laws of violence, coercion, and intimidation no matter how distasteful it may seem to you. You must understand what might make you a victim and correct it. You must learn not to place yourself in weak tactical situations. You must learn to be aware of the events around you and interpret them correctly. Advanced warning of a violent assault is invaluable in preventing it.

You must develop policies that place weapons, that you will use, at hand, at all times. Tasers, Mace, StunGuns, Firearms and other weapons must be evaluated for effectiveness. Remembering all the while that a weapon that you hesitate to use is worse than useless. Martial Arts training should be considered more for the attitude it teaches than for the skills. Maasad Ayoob, “In The Gravest Extreme”, is a recommended author, among others.

People, a car-jacker will not operate with a policeman around and the police can not be everywhere. Your fellow citizens can not be relied on for help. Assume a car-jacker is going to kill you and act appropriately. Be aware of your surroundings. Don’t let yourself be “boxed in”. Avoid hazardous situations. Above all, take responsibility for your personal security!

and for the anti-smoking crowd.

Published by admin under General

I wrote this one back in the early 90′s.

I heard something very disturbing on the radio some time ago. There seems to be a movement to prohibit, or control, low-tar and low-nicotine cigarettes. Not the regular “Kill ya’ quick” stuff, just the milder stuff. The erstwhile reason is, that type of product somehow contributes to smoking in the general populace. Isn’t this a little backwards? If we’re going to ban any of it at all, doesn’t it make sense to start with the high octane variety? This has got to be the same group that blocked the R.J. Reynolds Co. “Smokless Cigarette” with, roughly, the same, vacuous, argument. How many of these same folks are in favor of legalizing Marajuana? Almost certainly, they are anti-abortion.< ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

It doesn’t make sense, if you are concerned about health. However, it makes “crystal clear” sense if you look at it as a control game. These people want to force smokers to quit whether they want to, or not. They blocked the “Smokeless Cigarette” at the FDA because it would have removed their only argument upholding laws to ban smoking in public places. The secondary inhalation argument is weak enough anyway, in light of the laws of physics (gaseous dispersion in a volume). But, introduce a “Smokeless Cigarette” and it evaporates! The Non-Smoking advocates then have no legal argument they could use to repress a large portion of the population (smokers).

What’s happening now is that you want to remove the “mild stuff” from the shelves. Then, when only the raunchy high-tar, high-nicotine stuff is available, you will point to it and say “Gee, how unhealthy those cigarettes are … let’s ban them too, and leave them only with cigars, maybe that’lll get them to quit.”. Excuse me, but, I think you are stepping all over my rights, folks. If I want to quit then it’s MY choice, not yours!

This is right up there with the abortion issue and sexual preference. Maybe we ought to ban women who had abortions from public High School and College Campuses. After all, their philosophy and attitude may infect all those delicate young minds and cause more abortions to be performed. We will ban all mention of the word “abortion” and fine folks who use it in public $500.00. We will purge all mention of it in all public places. Then, we’ll make only the worst, and most painful, form of abortion available. We’ll make her wait until the seventeenth week and then only allow surgical techniques. Then maybe folks will shun abortions. Do you see the parallels?

Smoking may not be the healthiest habit, and it may not be pleasent to all, but, it has killed a lot less people than many intoxicants! I may smoke, but, it doesn’t impair my judgement, rot my brain, or make me hallucinate. It doesn’t cause traffic fatalities! I have actually used cigarettes to keep alert on long drives.

I will probably die from the pneumonia I catch, because I have to go outside, in 40 degree rain (with no roof), to smoke, long before Lung Cancer has a chance at me. I used to, at least, be able to take shelter in the lee of the building. Now I have to go all the way to the parking lot! Why not smoking lounges? At least put a roof out there so I don’t die from exposure.

This is insane! I thought I lived in America, home of the free. It doesn’t sound so free to me anymore. The next thing you know, I’ll have to get my skin bleached so I won’t be tempted to spend so much time in the sun and risk skin cancer.

I am not going to defend smoking because smoking is not the issue here. The issue is one of control. These folks are trying to force me to quit smoking simply because they don’t like me to smoke. Hey, what about what I like? What about that little phrase about EVERYONE having the right to the pursuit of happiness? Not just those who are politically correct, socially correct, or have the proper skin color. Make no mistake here, I am not implying that it is another form of bigotry. I am stating it bluntly!

It just so happens that I don’t drink, I have no tolerance for drunks, and I’ll kick a drug addict laying in the street as soon as spit on them. They can, at least, have the decency to crawl off somewhere, out of sight, to die and be miserable. Does that mean that I have the right to tell you not to drink, or get high? The answer is a resounding NO! Those folks have every right to be miserable, if they so choose! Who am I … God? I have bad news for you … you’re not God either!

These past six years I have felt more put upon every year. My anger has been building. The Non-Smoker advocates are trying to make second class citizens out of Smokers. Smokers have rights too, eroded as they may be. We are people, probably better people than you are. We don’t push our morals, or habits, on others, like a Pusher in a back alley with a dirty needle. We work and go on about our lives. We don’t gang up on some social group simply because we don’t like the color of their socks; that they use Colgate instead of Pepsodent; drink Pepsi instead of Coke; or just plain drink coffee.

If tobacco ever gets outlawed, then the next target will be coffee and coffee drinkers. It will be the same group and the cycle will be the same. It has already started.

By the way, I take my caffine, with cream and sugar, in pint size portions, eight times a day. I like salty French Fries. I also love a good venison steak with mashed potatoes and lots of rich brown gravy, all of it cooked in butter (margarine, yuch!). Dietetic is an assault on the taste buds which I will not stand for.

Intrusive and repressive laws and practices are not good. They are an indicator of the decline of a Society. Like a fever indicates an illness. The illness is bigotry and intolerance. This insanity is like a plague and it’s sweeping our good country. It is not Politically Correct to be bigoted against race, creed, or color, so you are going to be bigoted against social and political beliefs, and personal life-style choices. Can’t we just, each make our own choices and let our brother/sister make theirs?

Bigotry and intolerance

Published by admin under General

I watched a film last night, “Never Forget” with Leonard Nimoy, about the “Marmelstien vs. Institute for Historical Review” case. A very compelling drama. IHR was the antagonist who perported a view that was a complete denial of the “Holocaust”. Marmelstien (Nimoy), as protagonist, was a “Death Camp” survivor. This past few weeks also saw a bit of publicity surrounding the opening gala of the “Holocaust Memorial Museum”. < ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

In contrast, I also caught a bit of show put on by “Aryan Nations” and a few other grouips, related to IHR. This show outlined their beliefs. Some of which are; That Adam was Aryan; All other races were not human; The Holocaust was a hoax;…etc. All the while we are watching “Ethnic Cleansing”, in Bosnia-Hersegovia, being perpetrated by the Serbs.

I remember the tales my parents told of how they were treated, by the Japanese, in the internement camps, in Indonesia, simply because they were Dutch colonists. My mother still carries some pretty nasty scars (physical) from those days. The reason that you don’t hear about it is that Gen. McArthur suppressed the information. If Americans had known the truth of those camps, and others, they would never have stood for the continuance ot the Japanese power structure, any more than they have allowed the continuance of the German Third Reich.

History tells us of how the “Long Ears” were massacred by the “Short Ears” of Easter Island. How many tribes of early Europe were completely eliminated by their rivals? The same can be said of the South Pacific where entire tribes were. literally, eaten. The Spanish were responsible for the systematic killing of over 20 million Aztecs (many more than those Jews that died in the Nazi “Death Camps”) and the destruction of entire civilizations. Before we, as Americans, get too self-righteous take a close look at the genocidal war America fought against the “Native Americans” and how they continue to be suppressed, raped, and pillaged. How many “Indians” were killed, 10 or 15 million?

The current atitude I see right now is “If it isn’t anti-semetic then it’s tolerable”. The lost fact is that if you condone prejudice and bigotry ANYWHERE then YOU could be next!

I find the label “People of Color” to be an unfailing indicator of race prejudice. Those who have no race intolerance do not need the label. Gay rights is an absurdity. Sexual preferance is, and should be, a private matter. Not one of litigation. The United States was in violation of its own First Amendment when it required Utah to abolish polygamy as a condition to statehood.

This came up as a fortune in my bash shell

Published by admin under General

It appears that after his death, Albert Einstein found himself working as the doorkeeper at the Pearly Gates. One slow day, he found that he had time to chat with the new entrants. To the first one he asked, “What’s your IQ?” The new arrival replied, “190″. They discussed Einstein’s theory of relativity for hours. When the second new arrival came, Einstein once again inquired as to the newcomer’s IQ. The answer this time came “120″. To which Einstein replied, “Tell me, how did the Cubs do this year?” and they proceeded to talk for half an hour or so. To the final arrival, Einstein once again posed the question, “What’s your IQ?”. Upon receiving the answer “70″, Einstein smiled and asked, “Got a minute to tell me about VMS 4.0?”

I feel like I just stepped into a huge war …

Published by admin under General

It’s called an Application Server; TomCat/JBoss, Resin, and others.

I ran across a serious rant today. Now I seriously have issues with it but, I’ve been trying to get Tomcat 5.5 and JBoss 4.0 to work with Eclipse 3.0.1. I guess that puts me on the bleeding edge.

The problem with the rant is that AFAICT, it’s true;

  1. There is not a single JBoss 4.0 bat file that I didn’t have to fix.
  2. There is zilch support for Tomcat 5.x (and it’s been out over a year)
  3. others

There is no Tomcat5 support in the JBoss 4 Eclipse IDE. I now have to decide whether to try and hack it in or go to something like Resin.

The hell of it is, this makes me wonder how solid this technology really is.

Geek holy warz. Bah! Will they never end?

China is resisting refering the Iran Nuclear issue to the UN Security Council and, at this time, hints to veto such a move. China is one of the powers that has full veto power in the UN and has recently signed energy development agreements with Iran.

*grumble grumble*

The Jakarta community is a community, okay … a closed and insular one!

They changed the means for setting a listener port and didn’t document it, on Tomcat 5.5.

<Grrrr>

Does anyone want to tell me what the secret magic hand-shake is?

Oh … and they don’t call it a “listener port” anymore, it’s now called something else … what arrogant putzes!

It’s 0200 and I’m tired!

Published by admin under General

A whole day spent tinkering with Java stuff. ;(

Finished configuring Eclipse and then copied the whole branch to SG’s host as well. Also

  1. Intalled Tomcat and JBoss over there.
  2. Got connectivity to the old Contax MySQL DBs, over on the PDC.
  3. Puzzled over why DBEdit 1.0 plugin requires Xerces.Jar
  4. and then why it doesn’t work (duh!)
  5. Learned to LOVE Quantum’s DB plugin
  6. Debugged JBoss’ run.bat (obviously not previously tested as it’s fatally borked)
  7. Ran through the JBoss IDE tutorials
  8. Flagged WebDAV as the next thing to look at.
  9. Tried and failed to get a copy of Rational Rose for model generation (0.99 GB?!?!)
  10. Cursed Java developers for renaming every CS concept they could find
  11. … and being inconsistant about it (pretentious bastidges).
  12. Continuing curses at Tomcat for being opaque (if you have to hack your tools into submission …)
  13. Curse Eclipse/Tomcat/JBoss dox for being two versions down-rev.

It’s been a long day, good night gracie.
